The little blue pup loves to be held. |
Can become destructive if left alone for hours.
A Chihuahua is
only happy around its human. This breed doesnt handle being alone at home
as well as other breeds. When left alone, this breed becomes nervous. The
longer it is alone, the more anxious it gets, so it looks for something to
do- like knock over the garbage, or chew on someones best shoes. The dog
may normally know it is doing wrong, but he or she is just so upset that the
teeth must chew something. The dog that knows it has done wrong gets even
more panicky and upset, and becomes even more destructive. Locking a
Chihuahua in a crate when alone prevents most of the problem, but only works
for about 6-8 hours at a time. If you are away from home most of each day,
you should get a mellow dog that amuses itself.
Chihuahuas prefer to socialize only with other Chihuahuas.
They do tend to
be snobs, and associate only with their own kind, although I have seen them
accept a Pomeranian or Pekinese as an equal. Watching two or three
Chihuahuas play together is amusing. But be careful, each dog wants personal
time being the most loved dog, so dont make the mistake of getting too
many. An insecure dog is a problem dog.

Here is the
father of both puppies. He is a teacup toy, and very proud of his babies.
They live to love
These dogs are
exceptionally smart, and proud of their cleverness. I will never forget the
day my husband built a yard to hold our four-month-old pup safely. He
closed the gate and walked away, leaving her in the new enclosure. Before
wed walked twenty feet, she was prancing on the path ahead of us, showing
off how easily she had escaped. She expected us to be proud of her, and was
so surprised when my husband yelled at her.
So dont get
one of these tiny geniuses if you want a dog that obeys your every word.
Part of the joy of these dogs is their delight at finding their way around
the limits you set. They do want to please, but they are creative and want
you to see it. It takes time and patience to teach them the rules that must
be obeyed and what is play.
Is always excited to see you
This is part of
the charm of owning a Chihuahua. Every fiber of its being is thrilled that
you are alive. When you wake up in the morning, that little dog is dancing
around, overjoyed to see you. If you step into the bathroom, you come out
to an eager friend, ready for whatever is next. If you have been sitting
quietly, when you stand up, your little buddy is up and energized, ready to
play. Delight fills these little dogs every time you move. They pour out
love and will gladly lie next to you quietly for hours. They eagerly wait
to give you attention and are always ready to amuse you. This level of
energy might be too much for a person who is already nervous and is looking
for a calm pet.
Chihuahuas are
charming pets and have wonderful personality traits, but they are not the
right dog for everyone. They can be a challenge to train and are
demanding. They are ideal for people who spend a lot of time at home, and
their diminutive size is a plus for someone who lives in a small apartment.
